Understanding the Broader Context in Haiti

Haiti faces significant economic and infrastructure challenges that impact access to education, particularly in rural communities like Thomassique. Many families rely on limited and inconsistent income sources, and access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and reliable transportation remains constrained. These conditions can make consistent school attendance difficult and highlight the critical role that local schools play in providing stability and opportunity for children.

Haiti’s education system is largely privately operated, with more than 80% of schools run by non-government providers—many of which charge tuition.

At the same time, many families in Haiti live on very limited incomes, making it difficult to afford school fees. As a result, access to consistent education remains a significant challenge, particularly for children in rural communities.

Why is this the Case?

HEADCorp works to address these challenges by supporting a locally led school in Thomassique, Haiti. Through our partnership with St. Luc School, we help sustain daily school operations by providing resources for teacher support, student meals, and classroom materials.

This approach helps ensure that children have consistent access to education in a stable and supportive environment.
